Fights This Week 10-4-06
Friday, 10/6 (Showtime) Jean Paul Mendy (22-0) vs. Henry Buchanan (14-0) This fight is part of Round 2 of the Shobox 168-pound tournament. Mendy is a 168-pounder who knocked out Dallas Vargas in one round in his last fight. Buchanan has also never been bested as a pro and has 11 KO wins.
Anthony Hanshaw (20-0) vs. Lafarrell Bunteng (16-1-1) Hanshaw is riding a 20 fight unbeaten streak and has a win most recently in the first round of this tournament against the rugged Esteban Camou. He also has a win over Kingsley Ikeke. Bunteng, on the other hand, has a win over Jose Luis Herrera in round 1 of the tourney and has 16 knockouts to go with his 16 pro wins. He's also fought most of his recent fights above 180 pounds.
(Telefutura) Oscar Larios (56-5-1) vs. Robert Bonilla (22-8) Larrios has been in with the like of Manny Pacquaio and Israel Vasquez in his last two. Before that he had two wins over Wayne McCullough in 2005. He's real tough and experienced. Bonilla is an unknown commodity who has fought all but one of his fights in either Nicaragua or Panama.
No TV Riddick Bowe (42-1) vs. George Linberger (29-8) "Big Daddy" puts his remarkably good looking pro record on the line here against Linberger who post recently won a split-decision against Butterbean.
Saturday, 10/7 (Showtime) Diego Corrales (40-3) vs. Joel Casamayor (33-3-1) (WBC Lightweight belt) These guys are 1-1 against each other. The first fight saw Casamayor stop Corrales by putting his mouthpiece through his lip. In the second Corrales boxed his way to a close decision win. Both guys want this and we can expect to get our monies worth here.
Corrales' last five fights have been against the likes of Jose Luis Castillo, Acelino Frietas and Casamayor. He's 3-2 with 2 KOs and has been KO'ed twice himself. This guy lives, eats and sleeps his warrior persona and mentality.
Casamayor was floating around below the radar before his televised argument with Corrales a few months back on Friday Night Fights. He's lost 3 of his last 4 big fights and is going to need to go to the bag of tricks to beat Corrales again here.
Vic Darchinyan (26-0) vs. Glenn Donaire (16-2-1) (IBF Flyweight belt) Darchinyan is the rising star of the Flyweights. Donaire is poised to be his latest victim.
(HBO) Nikolai Valuev (44-0) vs. Monte Barrett (31-4) (WBA Heavyweight belt) Valuev is the 7-foot freak show you've been hearing so much about. He most recently dismantled Own Beck in 3 and before that won the title with a close decision win over John Ruiz. Barrett has decent Heavyweight power but will need to take incredible chances to chop down the big man here.
Tomasz Adamek (30-0) vs. Paul Briggs (25-2) A rematch of 175-pound prospects.
